About Vitalik Buterin

Vitalik Buterin is a Russian-Canadian programmer and writer who has accumulated a pretty impressive net worth within the past 15 years.

He is best known as one of the co-founders of Ethereum and head writer for Bitcoin Magazine.

Buterin is also recognized for his generous philanthropic contributions.

He has donated hundreds of millions of dollars in crypto coins to organizations ranging from technological research, human lifespan extension research, COVID relief funds, and plenty more.

Early Life

Born in Kolomna, Russia on January 31, 1994, to loving parents who heavily supported the education of their son.

Vitalik Buterin’s father was a computer scientist who helped to spark an interest in technology in his son at an early age.

Buterin lived in Russia until he was six years old.

After that, his parents decided to emigrate to Canada in search of better employment opportunities.

A few years after arriving in Canada, a young Vitalik started elementary school.

In the third grade, he was placed in a special class for gifted students where he was highly engaged in mathematics, programming, and economics.

From there, Vitalik Buterin attended a private high school in Toronto called The Abelard School

Vitalik Buterin expressed an interest in crypto at its conception and learned about Bitcoin from his father while he was still a teenager.

Then, nothing would stop him from diving headfirst into the world of crypto and the electronic systems which support it as a form of currency.

After graduating high school, Vitalik Buterin decided to further his education at the University of Waterloo.

He took advantage of many of the opportunities presented to him including a research assistant position for the famed cryptographer, Ian Goldberg.

Goldberg was the co-creator of Off-the-Record Messaging and was also the former board of directors chairman for the Tor Project, otherwise known as the Onion Browser.

In 2012, Buterin won a bronze medal in the International Olympiad in Informatics for his distinguished skills.

One year later, in 2013, Vitalik Buterin began visiting developers in other countries who shared his passion for code and programming.

Later that year, he returned home to Toronto and published a white paper proposing his idea for Ethereum.

If you haven’t heard of a white paper, it is a report or guide that is written to inform readers about a complex issue and presents a projected solution to that issue.

After being awarded a grant of $100,000 from the Thiel Fellowship in 2014, Vitalik decided to drop out of university in pursuit of beginning his professional career.

A few years later, in 2018, Vitalik Buterin received an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Business and Economics of the University of Basel on the occasion of the Dies Academicus.

Vitalik Buterin has made a name and reputation for himself through gaining experience in several different areas, such as writing, developing, and programming.

However, all of his different career paths have had one thing in common, an emphasis on cryptocurrencies.

The career of Vitalik Buterin was initially launched when he won the Thiel Fellowship for 100 thousand dollars.

He started writing articles about Bitcoin for a magazine called Bitcoin Weekly.

He was paid 5 Bitcoin each for every article, which amounted to about $3.50 at the time.

He continued writing for the site until it was shut down due to insufficient revenue.

However, this experience helped spark a passion for writing in Buterin.

After receiving a proposal from Mihai Alisie to start a new print publication in 2011, he became the co-founder and lead writer for Bitcoin Magazine.

In 2012, Bitcoin Magazine began issuing print editions of their works and has since been referred to as the first serious publication that was dedicated to cryptocurrencies.

While he was working with Bitcoin Magazine, Vitalik Buterin decided to reach out to Jed McCaleb at Ripple with the hopes of being offered a job.

McCaleb accepted, of course.

However, their partnership for proposed employment soon fell apart because Ripple was not able to support a U.S. work Visa for Buterin.

In 2016, Vitalik Buterin held a professional position on the board of editors for Ledger, which is a peer-reviewed, scholarly journal that focused on the production of full-length, original research articles with a primary focus on cryptocurrency and blockchain technology.

From there, Vitalik Buterin went on to co-create and invent a new crypto coin called Ethereum.

Ethereum is a decentralized mining network combined with a software development program.

The features of Ethereum directly correlate with the creation of new cryptocurrencies and other programs which share a single blockchain.

Ethereum was first conceived on a white paper proposal in November 2013.

In his proposal, Vitalik Buterin argued that Bitcoin needed a scripting language to build its application development.

However, his concerns for Bitcoin were not successful.

Thus, he proposed the development of a new platform that featured a more generalized scripting language, in order to support application development.

Vitalik Buterin is especially proud of the work that he has contributed to Ethereum, and it’s easy to see why.

Through careful planning and expert execution of a decentralized network, Ethereum has managed to expand the capabilities of the crypto world and beyond.

Today, Ethereum impacts millions of people around the globe, and it is expected to continue growing throughout the coming years.

Source of Income

Let’s look at Vitalik Buterin’s sources of income.

Ether Holdings

At the time of writing this, Vitalik Buterin owns 335,000 Ether.

However, he has owned up to 405,000 Ether.

When Ether’s value originally shot up to $1,400 in January 2018, Vitalik’s net worth sat at $567 million.

One month later, in February of 2018, Ether’s value dropped to around $900, which resulted in Vitalik’s 365,000 Ether having a projected net worth of an estimated $300 million.

By August 2018, the price of Ether dropped to $300, which resulted in the value of Vitalik Buterin’s coins falling to a net worth closer to $100 million before taxes.

However, in May 2021, Ether skyrocketed up to $4,000 and Buterin’s paper net worth soared with it, cresting at about $1.3 billion.

SHIB Holdings

In April of 2021, a group of anonymous creators banded together to form a coin called SHIB, otherwise known as Shiba Inu.

With their release, they announced that they had gifted Vitalik half of all the SHIB in existence.

This amounted to roughly 505 billion coins.

With the initial success of Shiba Inu, those 505 billion SHIB were worth $8 billion just one month later.

SHIB’s value continued to soar and by May 10, the 505 billion SHIB that he was gifted were worth a whopping $14 billion.

This sent Vitalik Buterin’s net worth soaring up to $16.3 billion when combined with his other holdings at the time.

On May 12, 2021, Vitalik began to dump large portions of the SHIB alt-coins that he was gifted.

In a little under an hour, he managed to convert around $60 million worth which he donated to various charities.

He also donated the equivalent of over 1 billion dollars in SHIB to a COVID relief fund for India.

As time went on, he continued to transfer all the gifted coins out of his wallet.

In 2014, Vitalik Buterin was awarded the Theil Fellowship, which is intended to help students drop out of college so that they can pursue other work.

This fellowship provides students with the tools and necessary resources that they will need to create startups, conduct scientific research, or work on a social movement.

There are less than 25 recipients of this award annually.

In 2014, shortly after he was awarded the Theil Fellowship, he won the World Technology Award in the IT Software category.

Four years later, in 2018, he was awarded his honorary doctorate from the University of Basel.

An honorary doctorate or other degree means that the university waived the usual requirements due to the extraordinary circumstances of the applicant.

So there you have it folks!

While Vitalik Buterin has taken a lot of risks throughout his career, he worked hard and followed his gut throughout his life, and his actions and decisions have led him to numerous successes.

From a young age, he stood out for his talents and knowledge within the technology industry and was able to learn the ins and outs of Bitcoin from his father when Vitalik was still just a teen.

After being awarded the Theil Fellowship and dropping out of college he went on to earn himself a variety of distinguished awards and recognitions through his writing and programming work.

Today, Vitalik Buterin’s net worth sits comfortably at 700 million dollars.

Much of his fortune lies within the crypto network, where he has collaborated on developing and designing popular cryptocurrencies, including Ethereum.

Now that you know what is Vitalik Buterin’s net worth, good luck with your research!
